Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist
A post-construction cleaning checklist works from the top down: clear the debris, dust ceilings, fans and fixtures, wipe walls, trim and windows, clean cabinets, kitchens and bathrooms, and vacuum and mop the floors last. Working in that order stops dust from settling on surfaces you have already cleaned. Use the checklist below for a renovation, an addition or a new build.
After any construction project, fine dust and leftover materials turn up in places you would not expect: sawdust, metal fragments, paint chips, wood shavings and plastic packaging. Even when the builder has tidied up, a final clean is still needed before anyone moves back in. Our construction cleaning service can help.
Before you start
- Wait until every trade has finished, and paint and caulking have dried, so you only clean once.
- Wear gloves and a dust mask. Fine dust from sanding and drywall is easy to stir up and spread.
- Gather microfibre cloths, an extension duster, a bucket, a vacuum (a HEPA-filter vacuum picks up the finest dust) and cleaners suited to each surface.
- Check the manufacturer’s care instructions for stone, hardwood, glass and appliances before using a new product.
- Watch for small nails and screws on floors and in corners. They are easy to miss and can injure a bare foot.
The post-construction cleaning checklist, step by step
- Remove the debris. Clear large debris, tools, packaging and leftover materials first. This is often called the rough clean, because you remove the big items before you focus on detail.
- Start at the top. Dust ceilings, ceiling fans, light fixtures, shelves and cabinet tops first. Dust falls to the floor, so the floor is cleaned last.
- Get the dust out of vents and grates. Move any furniture in the way, then use a damp cloth or a vacuum on vents, grates and the dust that has settled on walls and floors.
- Walls and baseboards. Move furniture away from the walls, dry dust walls and baseboards with a microfibre cloth or duster, then spot clean scuffs and smudges.
- Windows and windowsills. Start with a dry dusting or a vacuum. Then use warm soapy water and a sponge or cloth to lift the residue left behind. Clean frames, screens and tracks too.
- Cabinets and closets. Wipe the inside and outside with a damp microfibre cloth, working from the top of the cabinet or closet down.
- Kitchens and bathrooms. Clean and sanitize counters, sinks, appliances, tubs, showers, toilets and mirrors.
- Upholstery and soft furnishings. Dust and dirt settle into fabric after construction. Check the manufacturer’s instructions, vacuum, and book carpet or upholstery shampooing if needed.
- Floors last. Vacuum carpets, mop hardwood and clean tile grout, even if you covered the floors during construction.
- Final walk-through. Check each room in daylight for missed dust, streaks and debris, and touch up as needed.
Commercial and office post-construction checklist
For an office, retail space or other commercial fit-out, add these items to the list above:
- Reception, boardrooms and workstations: dust surfaces and wipe interior glass.
- Washrooms and lunchrooms: sanitize fixtures, counters and touch points.
- Entrances, stairwells and elevators: remove tracked-in debris, then vacuum and mop.
- Storage rooms and loading areas: sweep up leftover materials.
- Carpets and hard floors: vacuum, then scrub or polish as the flooring requires.
Our post-construction cleaning for commercial properties works in two stages, a clean-up stage and a detailing stage, so nothing is missed.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I follow for post-construction cleaning?
Work from the top down. Clear debris first, then dust ceilings, fans and fixtures, wipe walls, trim and windows, clean cabinets, kitchens and bathrooms, and finish with the floors. This keeps falling dust from landing on surfaces you have already cleaned. Use the step-by-step checklist above as your guide.
What is the difference between a rough clean and a final clean?
A rough clean removes large debris, tools and packaging so the space can be worked in. A final clean comes after all trades finish and covers dusting, windows, cabinets, kitchens, bathrooms and floors in detail. Our service follows the same two stages: a clean-up stage, then a detailing stage.
Should I clean before or after painting and flooring are finished?
Wait until every trade has finished and the paint and caulking have dried, then clean once from top to bottom. Cleaning earlier means dust from later work lands on surfaces you have already cleaned. A quick rough clean to clear debris between trades is fine.
Can I do post-construction cleaning myself?
For a small project, yes. Use the checklist, wear gloves and a dust mask, and work from the top down. For a large renovation, a tight deadline or fine dust in every room, a professional crew saves time. Request a free quote and we will walk through the job with you.
Do you offer post-construction cleaning for offices and commercial spaces?
Yes. We provide post-construction cleaning for offices, retail stores, medical facilities, restaurants and other commercial properties, as well as homes and apartments. See our post-construction cleaning page for what is included. We walk through the job with you and prepare a free detailed estimate.
